The Oak at Grande Provence

The Oak at Grande Provence: Where Heritage Meets the Plate

In the heart of Franschhoek — a valley whose name whispers of its French heritage — lies Grande Provence Heritage Wine Esate, founded in 1694 and shaped by more than three centuries of harvests and stories. From the first peoples of the Cape to early Dutch settlers who brought spices and recipes from Indonesia and the East, this land carries a tapestry of flavours born from heritage, trade, and migration.

At its centre stands a magnificent oak tree, a living witness to generations of gatherings. It is the inspiration for The Oak at Grande Provence, a name chosen for its symbolism of strength, heritage, and longevity. Executive Chef Anvor Fortuin draws on these deep roots, crafting dishes that celebrate the wild and earthy tastes of the Khoi and San, the hearty breads and stews of early Dutch kitchens, and the fragrant spice of ancient trade routes — all presented with fresh, refined artistry.

The renewal goes beyond the menu. Estate Manager Marna Viljoen, who guided every detail of the redesign, created interiors of natural colours and layered textures. Expansive windows and doors frame the gardens, vineyards, and the historic Jonkershuis, bringing the outdoors in and linking past and present. French oak and softly contemporary finishes give the spaces a timeless warmth.

Art completes the experience. Inside the restaurant, works carefully curated in collaboration with the Grande Provence Gallery add depth and quiet poetry. Beyond, the estate’s celebrated sculpture garden, part of the Gallery, invites guests to wander among larger works that heighten the sense of serenity.

Dining at The Oak at Grande Provence is more than a meal — it is a taste of history and a celebration of South African heritage, where every flavour and every detail carries the memory of this remarkable land.
