Matthew van Heerden
Matthew van Heerden is General Manager and Cellar Master of Grande Provence Estate, bringing 15 years of experience in management, winemaking and viticulture to the role.
Matthew attended Paarl Boys High School before going on to graduate from Elsenburg Agricultural Institute with a B. Agric. and later from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, with a management degree. Dual responsibilities are not unfamiliar to Matthew, having held similar positions at both Uva Mira and Iona vineyards. He was previously at Webersburg Wine Estate before leaving in 2016, to join Grande Provence Estate.
With an impressive level of both local and international attention already, Matthew has excelled as one of South Africa’s trail blazing young winemakers. In 2011 he was named as Diner’s Club South African Young Winemaker of the Year, at the 2006 International Wine and Spirits Competition Matthew produced the Best Chardonnay in the World. Matthew has also been ranked as a Top 10 Winemaker in the World and South African Wine Producer of the Year.
My wines reflect my dedicated pursuit of making authentic wines of utmost quality and fruit purity reflecting my country’s unique diversity of terroir.
I place the highest emphasis on viticulture and sustainable farming methods ensuring exceptional fruit with which to reflect South Africa’s world-class terroir in an elegant style of fruit expression and ageability.
