Leon de Bliquy

Metanoia

27 March - 27 April 2011

Leon de Bliquy

The Gallery at Grande Provence is privileged to present an exhibition by the renowned artist, Leon de Bliquy. This exhibition, 'METANOIA', will include new work - paintings, sculpture and graphic works, as well as and a selection of Leon's paintings and graphic works completed across two continents, over a 15-year period.

Leon de Bliquy returns to South Africa from Belgium, after an absence of 15 years. He has lived and worked in Stellenbosch since August 2009. As an Artist in Residence at Stellenbosch University Museum in 2010, Leon presented a series of workshops on lithography using his 100-year-old press, that accompanied him from Belgium.

He is inspired by mythology, poetry, literature and specifically the mythology of the Khoi-San.

"A 15- year odyssey of desperation and inspiration brought a wandering spirit to yet another Island of creative energy where a wonder lust was enticed by a seductive muse to further explore a not unfamiliar blend of poetry in nature and mythology in the illusions of colour, form and line to taunt the imagination. A place is provided where the energies of the past and the future dance in perfect harmony to the abundance in each magic moment. These paintings reflect the spirit of places, people and ever changing perspectives imprinted on the soul by what happens through the magic of pigment medium and brush." Leon de Bliquy

Tom Burgers

The photographic artist, Tom Burgers, has captured the beauty of the Karoo over a 40-year period. 'Beelde van 'n bedrygde wildernis / Images of a threatened wilderness' can be viewed in the 'Project Room'.

Tom's work strongly references the lifestyle personified through harsh weather conditions, the vast stretches of landscape and the Mythical beauty of the Cedarberg Mountains, whilst also capturing the historic significance of the area.

Sanae Sawada

Sanae Sawada studied graphic design at Musashino Art University in Tokyo. She has been living in Fish Hoek, Cape Town, since 2004.

Sanae's exhibition, 'The Mountain Woman' is shown in 'The Shop'. The show includes a series of works inspired by the topography of Cape Town, deeply sensual paintings and mixed media artworks that reflect the resilience, timeless age and beauty of the peninsula, within the body of feminine wisdom. These quirky, seductive figures celebrate daily miracles within everyday landscapes.

The exhibition will be opened on Sunday, 27 March 2011 at 11h00 by Christopher Swift and will be on view until 27 April 2011.
