3 South African Artists

Philip Badenhorst was born in 1957 and he was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Visual Arts, University of Pretoria. He is an exponent of Romantic Expressionism and in his most recent work he uses a solitary figure in an open landscape to explore the themes of loneliness and estrangement. Badenhorst’s career as painter includes 33 solo exhibitions and he participated in more than 100 group exhibitions in South Africa and abroad since 1981.

Rina Stutzer was born in 1976 and she studied at the University of Pretoria where she received a MA (Fine Arts) degree in 2007. She taught part-time at the Open Window Academy and the University of Pretoria. Since 1998 she has participated in several exhibitions across South Africa and was awarded the First Prize in the Ekurhuleni National Fine Art Award in 2007.

Helen Vaughan received the National Higher Diploma in Textile Design from the Cape Technikon with Honours in 1988. She was a part-time lecturer at the Cape Technikon’s Textile Department during 1997-1999, and has exhibited widely in South Africa and abroad (France and the USA). She is currently running a ceramic studio in Cape Town, creating individually crafted ceramics.
