An exhibition featuring new work created by Louis Jansen van Vuuren in celebration of his sixtieth birthday opens at The Gallery at Grande Provence Estate in Franschhoek on Sunday, 1st February at 11h00.
Jansen van Vuuren is both an artist and a designer whose work has gained him recognition throughout South Africa and internationally. In a distinguished career he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in South Africa and throughout the world. In addition to creating his very distinctive oils and pastels on paper, Jansen van Vuuren has been actively involved in art education and he has held several important positions such as National President of the SA Association of Arts and served amongst others on the Board of Trustees for the SA National Gallery and the Steering Committee of the Department of Arts and Culture for the 1995 Venice Biennale.
Since 2000 Jansen van Vuuren has been living and working in France and the themes he explores in his paintings are influenced by that environment although his love for his country of birth and in particular Table Mountain and the Boland are reflected in a number of the works created for this exhibition. Described as ‘a sublime colourist’, his imagery, often combined with strong unconscious symbolism, transports the viewers beyond themselves into a realm of memory that invokes personal history, longing and desire.
The exhibition, which runs until 4 March, will be opened by Dr Ton Vosloo, chairman of Naspers.
